Ilam — Nepal’s tea treasure
The Ilam district sits in the far east of Nepal, where the foothills of the Himalayas rise steeply from the plains. Tea has been grown here since the 1860s, and the combination of altitude (1,600–2,000m), cool mist, and rich volcanic soil produces a character found nowhere else.
Ilam Orthodox Black Tea is often called „Darjeeling’s twin“ — but that undersells it. Where Darjeeling is delicate and light, Ilam is fuller and more complex: a deep amber cup with malty body, muscatel grape notes, and a long, clean finish.
How it’s made
Orthodox processing means every leaf is hand-rolled, not machine-crushed. This preserves the cell structure of the leaf, releasing flavour slowly and evenly during brewing.
Brewing guide
- Water temperature: 90–95°C (never full boil)
- Amount: 3–4g per 250ml cup
- Steep time: 3–4 minutes first brew, 2–3 minutes second brew
- Multiple brews: Good quality orthodox leaves can be brewed 2–3 times
